Brazil's Solar Energy Surge: Powering a Sustainable Future
Jun 16, 2025
According to the latest data from ABSolar, Brazil's solar energy sector is experiencing a remarkable boom. By March 2025, the country's solar installed capacity exceeded 55 GW, claiming 22.2% of the total power structure and becoming the second - largest power source after hydropower. With an astonishing addition of around 300 GW in 2025 alone, and a cumulative capacity of 52 GW by December, the growth pace is staggering.
The sector shows a clear split: small - and medium - sized systems lead with 37.6 GW, while large - scale plants contribute 17.6 GW. Environmentally, solar power has helped Brazil cut approximately 66.6 million tons of CO₂ emissions. In just the first quarter of 2025, over 147,000 new PV systems were installed, powering 228,700 households.
Nationwide, 5,500+ cities have adopted distributed PV systems, and every state hosts large solar plants. Minas Gerais stands out, with 900,000 households using solar energy. As global focus on renewables grows, Brazil’s solar industry is set to be a key player in energy transition, both domestically and in the global green market.
